Choosing exterior paint colors
Jul 30 2013 10:52AM

Looking to paint the exterior of your home?

Many homeowners find it difficult to visualize what their house will look like when it is painted. In addition to that, choosing an exterior paint color for your home often involves choosing several co-coordinating paint colors such as those needed for windows, doors, trims, shutters, etc.

While choosing what color to paint to paint your home, here are some factors you should consider.

1. How Many Colors to You Plan to Use?

When you are looking for exterior paint colors, consider how many paint colors you will be choosing. Modern homes sometimes have metal framed windows that do not require painting. But they will have eaves that may be painted in a contrasting color to the siding. If you do have window trims and shutters that will be painted you must decide how many colors you want to work with.

2. What is the Style & Material of Your Home?

The style of your home and the existing materials, such as brick siding, stone and roof color are very important factors. These different aspects will have a big impact on what colors will look best with your home.

Definitely make sure to go to a local paint or home improvement store and pick up some exterior paint color brochures. This way you can see lots of different combinations that work well together. Seeing samples may also give you some of your own ideas.

Another idea to help you choose paint colors for your home is to look around your neighborhood at homes. This way you can find homes with similar styles to that of your own, and see what paint colors work with it.

Tips For Choosing Colors For Your Home
May 11 2012 7:35PM

At Precision Painting Plus, we have been supplying local neighborhoods with professional painters for over twenty years becoming well-acquainted with the New York communities we have been servicing.

In terms of concept, aesthetic, style, design, resources, and budget, PPP understands pricing within means, and they know the importance of home decoration and upkeep. Today we are happy to provide a few tips that may help you choose colors for your home.

If a room has a dominant element to it like an Oriental rug or patterned upholstery, choose a paint color from that pattern. If you want a neutral color, match it with whatever neutral colors can be found in that pattern.

Start painting the formal (living room, dining room, entryway) areas of the house first, and then pull a color from those areas for other areas of the house.

With the ground below us and the sky above us, we are socialized to expect colors to rise from dark to light. As such, you should try to have the darkest colors on the floor, some sort of middle option in the middle, and the lightest colors on the ceiling. Or, if you inexplicably want to confuse your mind and overall perception of reality, do the opposite.

If you are an especially predictable individual, look at the clothes you wear to get an idea of what color you would enjoy seeing in your house. Or, simply think or your favorite color.

It is good to have a calming blue or green in an area where you intend to rest.

There should be a little black in every room, because it clarifies everything else in the room.

Contrast is important, both in terms of how different colors are and in what ratio a color shows up relative to another color. The ratio to keep in mind is 60 percent for a dominant color, 30 percent for a secondary color, and 10 percent for the accent color.

Instead of fighting an un-winnable fight and painting a small room white to make it look big, embrace its smallness. Paint it a warm color and its coziness will embrace you as well.

Finally, stay true to yourself. Make sure that whatever you choose is something you want.

We would love to meet you and help with all of your house painting needs, so give us a call today and book a free estimate. You can also ask us about our free professional color consultations!

Easy Tips on Painting Molding in a Carpeted Room
Mar 23 2012 11:33AM

Family-friendly Long Island painters, Precision Painting Plus has supplied local neighborhoods with professional painters for over twenty years.

• As logical as it sounds, you need to choose the color you want to paint your trim before you begin. There are a number of options, depending on your situation. You can either match the color of the wall exactly, vary from that color a little to give the room a more diverse feel, or choose something altogether new. What works best will depend on your personal preferences and the dynamics of the room. To figure it out, buy paint samples and try them out on the trim.

• Place tarps down all over the perimeter of the room, and make sure they overlap a little. Put the edge of the tarp into the space between the trim and the carpet’s edge. With the flat end and handle of the knife, ease the tarp into that space and into the corner of the room. It is important that the carpet be completely covered and sealed. Conversely, the trim should be as exposed as possible.

• Tape the tarp to the carpet to keep it flat. Also place masking tape right where the top of the trim meets the wall, leaving no space but keeping the trim exposed. Do this around the entire perimeter and overlap the tape when you are done.

• It’s now time to paint the trim, so move from one end all the way around. The side and top of the trim should be covered. Don’t brush beyond the perimeter of the masking tape, and allow the paint to dry. If necessary, apply a second coat.

The solid reputation that Precision Painting Plus has built throughout various New York communities is a testament to their dedication and commitment to customer service. In addition to our highly-trained, specialized backgrounds, no other Woodbury painters are as involved or up to date in their respective fields.

Precision Painting Plus would love to meet you and help with all of your house painting needs, so give us a call today and book a free estimate. You can also ask us about our free professional color consultations!

How to prepare a room for painting in just 10 Easy Steps!
Jan 14 2012 1:45AM

1. Transfer all furniture to another room if possible. Any furniture too heavy to move out of the room, place in the middle of the room away from all walls.

2. Use painter’s tape for taping windows and doors

3. To protect from paint and dust, cover remaining furniture in the room, as well as the floor, with plastic drop cloths.

4. Remove screws and photos from the walls, and fill the holes until you get a smooth wall.

5. Switch off all electrical switches in the room.

6. Keep children and pets away from the room.

7. Assemble all equipment including drop cloths, sand paper, painter’s tape, paint scraper, spackling compound, putty knife, TSP (trisodium phosphate) and paint.

8. Remove all lights from the room.

9. Wash down all of the walls, removing grease grime and grit. Use the TSP for this.

10. Paint the surfaces in the following order:

- If you are going to prime first, do the ceiling and then trim and then walls.

- Paint the ceiling entirely.

- Next paint the walls.

- Next paint any baseboard trim.

- Next paint any doors and door trim.

- Lastly, paint the windows.

If you follow these simple steps you can finish your paint job earlier and in a more efficient way.

Caring for Wooden Floors
Oct 21 2011 1:17PM

Wooden flooring has durable finishes that are easy to repair. They are naturally warm and serve as excellent insulators. However, there are negatives to wooden flooring.
In order to properly care for something, you need to know all of its positive and negative qualities.

Some of the disadvantages of wooden flooring are listed below.

- Wooden flooring is not scratch resistant.
- Liquids falling on wooden flooring can be destructive.
- Wooden flooring is one of the most expensive flooring.

With that being said, it is clear that special care should be taken to wooden flooring.

Below we have offered some tips and solutions for caring for your wooden flooring.

Always protect your wooden flooring from water, as the latter might cause damage. In other words, we'd suggest you don't wash your hardwood floor with a wet mop!
The best way to clean this type of flooring is to sweep and/or vacuum it on a regular basis.
Never EVER use self-polishing acrylic waxes on wooden floors, as they can make the wood slipper and will also dull its appearance.
In case any spills do occur, clean your wooden floor with a dampened towel as soon as possible.
Rather than waxing, try buffing your hardwood floor.
Before placing furniture on hardwood flooring, put soft plastic or fabric-faced glides under the legs. This prevents scuffing and scratching.
Throughout the winter months, blow pacifier in rooms with wooden flooring, as to minimize wood movement and shrinkage.

DIY: Paint Textured Walls
Sep 28 2011 2:17PM

How to paint textured walls

The cheapest, quickest and easiest way to change the look of a room is painting the walls. Textured walls require special attention while being painted. The nooks and crannies of a textured wall create a challenge to the painter.

There are ways to get around them. Here are some quick & easy tips for you mentioned below.

1. First choose the correct kind of paint. A semi-glass paint will give better coverage because it is not as easily absorbed by the texture as a flat paint is. Semi-gloss finishes are also easier to clean.

2. Now prepare your surfaces. Priming a textured wall is just as important as priming a non-textured wall.

3. Tape off any surfaces you want to protect. Also protect the floor area with a drop cloth as well.

4. Choose the correct brushes.

5. You can use the large wall brush in an “X” pattern or diagonal back and forth motion over the surface to give yourself nice even coverage.

6. You can also use a roller, but rollers tend to glide over a textured wall. Missing many of the nooks resulting uneven coverage.

Wait for the paint to dry. If you have missed any area, touch up those areas or apply a second coat of paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Enjoy your new wall color

Common Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes
Aug 15 2011 11:46AM

When you decide to remodel your kitchen, there are many common mistakes that people make which you should be aware of. Avoiding them the first time around is a lot easier than having to fix them later.

These common mistakes are:
1. Wrong sizes of cabinetry or countertop.
2. Insufficient room for appliances
3. Wrong size cut-outs in the countertops

People often make these mistakes because these mistakes seem like they would in fact be the easiest parts of kitchen remodeling

Many people make these mistakes because in fact they seem like they would be the easiest parts of kitchen remodeling, and are therefore often overlooked.

The wrong sizes in cabinets can really mess up the space allotment that you may have in your kitchen. You need to be sure that you have the right sizes when picking them up. This can save you a lot of money & time in the long run. Make sure to properly measure all aspects of the room needed for the cabinets. The same thing goes for your countertops.

If you want to install a stone, as these usually come in slabs, the right size is needed. Because the stone is expensive, making a mistake in measurement is a very costly one.

While installing the cabinets you need to make sure to leave and account for adequate room for the gas and refrigerator. When the appliances arrive you may find that they will not fit into the space you provided.

The last common mistake is the cut-outs being wrong in the countertops. How does the sink set into the countertop? You need to be very calculative.

It’s always better to do right thing at the first time.

Tips from the Pro's!
Aug 11 2011 11:12AM

When estimating the amount of paint needed for the job, we measure the square footage of the area we're going to paint, then divide that number by the coverage area listed on the side of the paint can we're using. Knowing that W=width, L=Length and H=Height, we use this formula: 2 x ( W L ) x H ( W x L )

Here's an example of this equation in action using a room measuring 9' x 12' with an 8' high ceiling. The formula with the correct numbers plugged in would be: 2 x ( 9 12 ) x 8 ( 9 x 12 )

Next, we use this formula to measure out the closet space. Once you have this figure, add it to the total of the room space, and you come up with 444 square feet. Then we divide this number by the coverage area printed on the side of the can. The side of this paint can says it covers 400 feet per gallon, so that means we need about one gallon of paint for each coat of paint we plan on applying. We always count on applying at least 2 coats, so we'll need 2 gallons of paint for this job. It's completely normal to have more paint than you need, in fact, we recommend having a little left over to fix missed spots.

Do We Use Latex or Oil?
First, we need to know what type of paint is already on the wall by rubbing the wall with a cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol. A latex based paint will dissolve quickly which means we can repaint with oil or another latex based paint. An oil based paint will not dissolve, so we'll need to use an oil based paint to repaint, or use a coat of conversion paint, then use latex on top of that.

How We Get Water Stains on Textured Ceilings.
Try putting bleach into a spray bottle, and give the stained area a light spray. Check the stain after letting it dry over night, and you might see a little improvement. If so, give it another light spray. This often takes water stains out.

What Tools to Use?
When using brushes with oil based paints we use china bristle, and when using latex paints, we use nylon or nylon/polyester brush. We find that nylon/polyester brushes last longer than straight nylon, and this combination will give us a better finish. We only use the highest quality and the most expensive brushes, because we do not want the bristles falling out while we're painting.

The surface being painted will dictate what size of brush you will need. Brushes generally come in sizes of 1" to 4," available in increments of half an inch. Smaller brushes are ideal for trim, windows, doors, and shutters, while a large 4" brush would be ideal for exterior siding. We recommend that if there is a paint product that has recommendations that make it difficult to clean up (instructions on side of can,) a cheap brush might be an option. It can be thrown away when the job is finished.

As far as paint sleeves go, they are available in many different size naps. They can range from 5 mm to as high as much as 40 mm. Generally, the smoother or glossier the surface you are painting, the smaller the nap. A 5 or 10 millimeter nap is recommended for doors while a 15 or 20 mil nap may be better if you are painting interior walls. For outside surfaces, a thicker nap would be advisable.

We also use tools to prepare surfaces for painting like scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sanding blocks, caulking guns, roller trays and a brush combs. We also use plastic to cover your furniture and drop-sheets to protect your floors and stairs.

Tips for painting exterior siding
Jul 26 2011 1:53PM

Painting the exterior of a house is often a major job. Once the exterior surface is prepped for painting, you are almost ready to brush, roll, or spray on a new coat of paint.

Some important information about painting your exterior siding.

1. Paint colors tend to vary slightly from batch to batch.
2. Mix all the paint together in one or two large containers. Leftover paint should go back in the original paint cans and be resealed.
3. Plan to pain on a sunny day, working in the shade after the sun has dried off the early morning moisture.
4. Try not to let the setting sun catch you in the middle of an exterior wall at the end of the day.
5. In case you have to stop, try to finish painting an entire course of siding, otherwise you may leave lap marks in the middle of the course.
6. Plan to paint high places in horizontal sections across the top of the exterior wall.
7. Never lean away from an extension ladder.
8. Paint one high section, move the ladder, and paint another. Repeat this process all the way across the exterior wall.
9. Lower the ladder after doing so to work on a lower section.
10. An extension ladder is beneficial for the job.
11. If your house has dormers, you may have to paint them from the roof instead of a ladder. If you do not want to do this, your ladder should reach at least 3 feet above the edge of the roof.

When painting either clapboard or shingles, you should pay special attention to the areas around door and window casings. Follow these guidelines for better finishing.

Improving the look and feel of your home!
Jun 27 2011 2:14PM

We all know that a home is the place where we live, and therefore we want it to look clean and nice. A home is generally going to reflect the personality of those who reside in it. A home is there to relieve us of our stress after a rough day, and make us forget the difficulties of everyday life. For this reason, it should look and feel inviting, peaceful, and appealing. In home improvement, aiming to get these kinds of feelings and trying to create a certain atmosphere is called interior design.

What do you think? Where should you give special attention to in your home? You might not be a designer or a decorator, but you can still improve the look and feel of your home!

Make a style statement!

The first thing you've got to do is pick a style you want your home to portray. This style should definitely be given a lot of thought, as it will be a reflection of your personality. Some style examples you may want to look into are traditional, modern, eclectic, or transitional.

Next step is choosing a theme. This is one of the most important tasks at hand. Each room has its own theme, so always consider and respect it. Consider which parts of your home are most often seen by guests and family - and then make sure to turn these places into environments that are warm and inviting. You can make an inviting environment by choosing functional furniture, coordinating the furniture and other elements in the room, and paying close attentions to the paint colors you choose to utilize. Your focus should be to make a feeling of completeness to the room.

Last step is lighting. Choose the right lighting - proper lighting is going to play a vital role in transforming the look of your home. You must be sure to pay attention to little details like this because they can really have an impact on your space, without costing a large amount of time or money. You should be creating a visual impact that is bold by strategically planning out the lighting. You can use either concealed lighting or you can choose very bold lighting to make statements all on their own - depending on the look you are trying to achieve.

The home improvement tips like these will steer your home improvement endeavor in the right direction.

If all else fails, you can get color consultations or interior design consultations for more help!
